About Pei-Ciao: the scientist

I started my scientific journey as a marine scientist but quickly discovered that I have a greater passion for molecular and cellular biology. I have worked in diverse fields, from the molecular evolution of marine organisms to disease modeling in inner ear hair cells derived from stem cells (my postdoctoral research). Over time, I have accumulated broad experiences and a diverse array of skillsets. My current career trajectory is the development of sensory systems, esp. the inner ear, using stem cell-derived organoid systems. Ultimately, I will apply such knowledge to develop robust systems for tissue and cell regeneration.

When Pei-Ciao is outside of the lab…

I love animals and nature. During my Ph.D., I was involved in Campus Cats’ efforts in managing and finding homes for stray cats around the campus via TNR (trap-neuter-release) and regular feeding. I also luckily found two wonderful furriends (Chairman Meow and Blueberry) from my old backyard and an awesome organization in Indianapolis (IndyHumane), respectively. I also enjoy hiking, traveling, diving, and exploring new things. Staying curious and adventurous keeps me amazed by the wonder of life and the world everyday (it is also a fundamental drive for me as a scientist).
